It's called The Ghost Pirate's Gift, and it'll be 114 pages of piratical awesomeness. I've launched a Kickstarter to cover the costs of printing the book, and I'm proud to report that the funding has already reached its minimum!

The next challenge is secure stretch goals; we've already passed the $5000 mark which means everyone at the $25+ level gets a bookmark and a die-cut sticker... but at $6000, we can upgrade the book to nicer paper and better stock for the cover!

I've also got some pinup artists supplying me with amazing artwork for the book: so far, I've got Riley Rossmo, Mike Rooth, Tom Fowler, Fiona Staples, and Nick Bradshaw announced. I'll announce two more tomorrow (Friday) and a final artist on the weekend. Keep your peepers trained on my Twitter feed for more news.
Thanks so much to those of you who've pledged, and for those of you who are planning to. It's been a wild ride so far but I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-40592634237073853462013-10-16T22:59:00.002-04:002013-10-16T22:59:20.630-04:00Zomkeys variant coverI've been pals with Josh Stafford, a bigshot at the mighty Mayfair Theatre in Ottawa, for a few years now. When I heard that he was writing a comic book about zombie monkeys, I was extremely surprised that he didn't ask me to do a pinup or something for it. I love zombies (I was nominated for a Ghastly Award for lettering and colouring Rebel Blood).

I told him that I'd do something for his next issue, but he said there was room in this one so I whipped this up:

And the next day I got a very nice email from the publisher asking if they could make it the cover of a variant issue!

Lovely news!

I'll be sure to post in the coming weeks more information about where you can purchase Zomkeys #1. Thanks to Mirror Comics (and, of course, Josh) for the opportunity.
Whereas an artist will create a daily sketch, in ink, and post it to 'the internets' for 'some reason'. I decided to play the game; every ten days I'll post my sketches here on the sketchblog (to reward those of you who are still checking it out).

Without further adieu, the monsters of Inktober:
Otherwise, what am I up to? Well, the third part of Strangebeard, "The First Pirate Master", is nearly complete (with the introduction of Captain Morder, a major villain). My diary webcomic The Adventurers is still truckin' on with new strips every Wednesday and Friday. And I'm, of course, keeping busy with much freelance work. I'm also lettering two Image Comics titles right now (Bedlam and Drumhellar).Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-1102108685682615312013-05-28T14:29:00.002-04:002013-05-28T14:30:52.136-04:00Strangebeard, Part 2Hi everyone! I haven't updated my sketchbook blog much in the last little while because my work has become all-consuming. Along with the usual illustration work, I'm currently lettering a 160-page graphic novel, teaching a comics class, and updating The Adventurers AND Strangebeard twice a week.

Speaking of Strangebeard: thank you. Thanks for reading, thanks especially for sharing, and thanks for commenting. My little pirate-comic-that-could is getting thousands of hits and I am grateful for every single one of them. Part 2 has started, and Captain Jenny Strangebeard and her merry crew of rogues and ruffians are about to face bigger (and weirder) adventures. I hope you'll come along for the ride.

In honor of the completion of "The Girl and The Ghost", here's something from the vaults: the first-ever drawing of Jenny Strangebeard from the original pitch!
She hasn't changed too excessively; the colour of her two eyes is different and her general colour scheme is less saturated than it was.
It's always gratifying when you find out something you like exists in another version, and that version is better than the one you already love. Such is the case with Disney's DuckTales.

DuckTales was a t.v. show (much beloved by my generation) that premiered in 1987, running for three years and spawning one theatrically-released motion picture and two Nintendo games. I loved it; I loved the adventure-filled plots, the well-drawn characterization, and the moustache-twirling villains. Most of all, I loved the character of Uncle Scrooge, the world's richest duck and great uncle to the three Duck boys (Huey, Dewey, and Louie). Like a geriatric combo of Indiana Jones and Citizen Kane, Scrooge groused and bare-knuckled his way through the endless bizarre challenges that faced his family, and he always came out on top.

But then the show ended, and Scrooge filed himself away in my subconscious for twenty years (resurfacing briefly in the analogous Phoney Bone, who appeared in Jeff Smith's Bone). Then, out of the blue, a friend recommended Don Rosa's Eisner Award-winning The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Filling in the gaps of how Scrooge came to be the world's richest duck, Rosa used the original Disney stories and created a whole world of adventures for Scrooge as a younger man: he went everywhere from the Wild West to darkest Africa and back again. He was smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies, and he made it square.

Imagine how pleased I was that there was an even better version of the Scrooge I had grown to love over bowls of cereal at four o'clock every weekday? I devoured Life and Times and Rosa's companion books (and even commissioned a drawing from Rosa himself) and then filed Scrooge back away, a brighter light than I had ever anticipated.

And then I found out Scrooge was even better than that!

I had always heard amazing things about the late Carl Barks; how he'd become known as the 'good artist' while Disney never credited those who actually drew their comics. How he'd created Scrooge McDuck and others, and how Barks had fleshed out Donald and created the best Duck stories of all time. But actually finding the works, curated in any sort of logical fashion, seemed like heavy lifting that was beyond me at the time. Luckily, Fantagraphics has started reprinting Barks's stories in handsome and affordable hardcovers. I've been able to see, for the first time, what Scrooge was like right out of the gate, and they are some of the best stories I've ever read.

Capcom has announced an HD remake of the original Nintendo DuckTales game (which looks pretty good) and that's got me thinking about Scrooge once again. Here's a drawing of one of my all-time favorite comicbook heroes. He's the best.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-59831349424631954822013-04-02T14:28:00.002-04:002013-04-02T14:28:53.832-04:00StrangebeardToday's the big day! I've launched Strangebeard, my sophomore webcomic, on its maiden voyage.

Strangebeard tells the story of Jenny Brigham, a servant girl living on bustling Crook Island. Although she loves her mother and works very hard at the Shivering Timbers Inn, Jenny has always dreamed of a life as a briny outlaw on the high seas. On her twelfth birthday, she'll get her wish.

Strangebeard is a project near and dear to my heart. I love all things pirate and Strangebeard has been the most professionally rewarding work of my career. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy working on it.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-62287304057586714172013-03-11T10:06:00.006-04:002013-03-11T10:11:05.982-04:00I Smell GoodHere is an acrylic painting I finished for my excellent friend Scott Borys. He did some website work for me on That's So Kraven! and he's an all-round great guy.

Scott is something of an adventurer; he runs a highly entertaining blog called I Smell Good, which is all about hitchhiking, yoga, and the internet. One of his signature moves as a hitchhiker is a sign that says "I Smell Good" (obviously) and that was the starting point for his painting.

If you're ever in Saskatoon, I highly recommend sitting down with Scott for a drink and a Western flick. One of my favorite things to do. I'm currently lettering a creator-owned book called Bedlam (which you should be buying!) but I don't own it... But I do own Archie Snow.

Archie, for those of you who remember, appeared in nearly thirty issues of Proof back in the late 2000's. In 2009, I was contacted to produce a mythology-based story for an anthology that never quite took flight. I released the story (relettered with a fancy cover) as a digital download at the Montreal Comic Con last year. But for those of you who missed it...

Here it is. Happy Creator Owned Day!
you dig the story, and I hope you go out and buy some fine creator-owned

Yesterday was my father's birthday. I drew him a pretty decent John Wayne ten years ago so I thought I might update his Wayne collection for him. I get my love of both James Bond and Westerns from my dad; although his favorite cowboy is John Wayne and mine is Clint Eastwood.

Here's a good 'dad' story. One morning, Dad was all dressed up in his long leather duster and his favorite Stetson as he was going to take his horse Babe out for a ride. My brother, sister and I had walked out to the end of the driveway (a few hundred metres) to meet the schoolbus. The bus arrived just as we heard my mother yell to my sister, "You forgot your lunch!" There was no time to go back for it, so we decided we had to go. When we got on the bus, everyone was looking very intently out the window in the direction of our house: my father, in full regalia, was riding Babe full-tilt down the driveway with my sister's lunch in his free hand. He rode up to the side of the bus, handed my sister the brown paper bag, and said, "Here you are, little lady."

I love you, dad. If I'm a good father at all, it's all because of you.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-70116901053104759752013-02-22T17:31:00.001-05:002013-02-22T17:35:22.635-05:00Popsicle PirateSometime last year, my wife bought a little wooden pirate's face from Omer de Serres (the Quebec art supply store). The moment I laid eyes on his boring little face, I knew I'd have to take a whack at it.

So, he's done! I had my acrylic paint and hot glue out last weekend for another job. I thought he came out rather well, so here's the scoop: his face is my gift to you. Just print him off and slap him on your own face and you're a popsicle pirate too!
I have very fond memories of Mr. Best reading The Hobbit to us in grade four: I wish I could find the drawing I did of Smaug back then! The Montreal Mini Comic Con was yesterday! The show went very well; it was the best mini-con I've had in a few years. Thanks very much to everyone who came to my table. I sold out of most of my books and did a bunch of sketches (many for new fans, which is great). Met Marvel artist Nick Bradshaw, who was very cool. We had a nice chat about N.C. Wyeth, and Wolverine.

Now comes the big push before Christmas; finishing up freelance design and illustration work, clearing my commission list (thanks again, everyone!), and finishing up letters for the next issues of Bedlam, Dia de Los Muertos and a new unannounced book.

It's been a hard year, but it's been a very good one. I am very grateful for my fans, my students, my friends, and my family; I really couldn't do any of it without you.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-31032471116611046932012-11-30T14:25:00.003-05:002013-01-08T13:15:24.899-05:00MomIt was my mom's birthday this week, so I drew her up a little inkwash drawing to put in her card. The excellent Mayfair Theatre in scenic Ottawa, Ontario, is running an IndieGoGo fundraiser to pay for a new digital projector. Since the Mayfair needs the projector to continue running, and since I want the Mayfair to continue to run, I said 'yes'.
"Breakfast on the Death Star" will be available to bid on at the silent auction being held December 1st and 2nd at the Mayfair Theatre in Ottawa. It is acrylic, 11"x14". If you are unable to attend, I highly suggest adding a few dollars to the Mayfair's IndieGoGo campaign.
Mayfair force be with you!Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-20775219054529044942012-10-22T20:25:00.000-04:002012-10-22T20:26:34.641-04:00Pirate-style wanted posterMy excellent nephew Dane turned five years old this past week. I wanted to do something nice for him, but nothing cool immediately jumped to mind. I'd done the map of Blackbeard for him previously, so I thought I'd stick with the piratical theme and struck upon the notion of doing a wanted poster for him.

The idea came to me as I was watching Aardman's excellent The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists for the umpteenth time with my mother. Wanted posters are a big part of the plot (with the Pirate Captain's wanted poster starting out at a pathetic 12 doubloons and increasing exponentially as the movie goes on), so I started with the original design of the Pirate Captain's wanted poster and made it unique to Dane.

I took a piece of heavy 11x17 Bristol board and soaked it in tea (decaf, the wretched stuff). After it dried, I went over it with dirty ink for the greyscale stuff and thick black ink (using a brush) for the important stuff. I was pretty happy with it, it's a neat-looking piece with a good sense of scale. I had planned on folding it up but I was so happy with it that I made a cardboard carrying case for it, as my mother was taking on a plane with her.
My sister-in-law sent a charming little video of Dane opening up his gift (which included a DVD of The Pirates! and a skull-topped pencil) and it made my day. Thanks to director Peter Lord and writer Gideon Defoe for making a great movie that continues to inspire me, and thanks to pirates (who know why they're the best).Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-36583213792251021472012-09-17T10:47:00.000-04:002012-09-17T10:47:27.496-04:00Montreal Comic Con roundupAnother Montreal Comic Con has come and gone. The show has ballooned from less than a thousand people only a couple of years ago to something like 20,000 people. That's great for the city and the show itself, but I definitely felt the growing pains this year. Sales were lower than last year, which were lower than the year before that. I think the show is entering that comfortable sweet spot for bigger guests, but it's becoming less profitable for fellows like myself.

Here's a sample of the sketches that kept me busy all weekend. Thanks to everyone that came out to see me and pick up some comics, pages, and sketches from me.
Speaking of Green Wake... Kurtis Wiebe won the Shuster Award for Best Writer on Saturday night! Since Kurtis couldn't be at the show, I accepted on his behalf. Very proud of him and very proud of the book.

Other highlights of the show included the three panels I did on Saturday; my own panel on Making Comics (the class I teach at Syn Studio), the Elephantmen panel with my excellent friend Richard Starkings, and the Ben Templesmith panel. Ben is a tremendously clever and fun guy, I had a great time chatting with him all weekend. I also had the great pleasure of meeting the tremendously talented Mark Chiarello and seeing the unlettered, uncoloured pages from Hellboy in Hell #1 (thanks to Christine and Mike Mignola for such an honor). I spent a bit of time with Darwyn Cooke and he told me some good news about upcoming Parker projects. Very exciting.

Back to business! Bedlam #1 is on its way and I'm supplying the letters for it. It's some of Riley's best work yet and I can't wait until its unleashed on the world.
Thanks again, Comics Alliance!

I am a guest of the Montreal Comic Con again this year. This has been my go-to show for the last four years; Montreal is my home now and it's been amazing to see the show go from a couple thousand people at most to the media event it has become.

If you are interested in tracking me down at the show, here's how to find me:

I will be at table 1710, next to the intimidating Mark Chiarello. I will also be at two panels: I am running one myself called Making Comics (Saturday, 11 AM) which will be about making your own minicomics, and I will be moderating the Elephantmen panel with the marvelous Richard Starkings at 4 PM on Saturday. Don't miss 'em, there are a lot of surprises in store.

I will be selling minicomics, comics, trade paperbacks, and doing sketches in varying sizes. I will also have a unique item this year: if you purchase something from me, you will get a card with a website and a password on it. This combination will allow you to download and unlock a pdf with a brand-new 8-page Archie Snow story! I completed the story a while ago for an ill-fated anthology, and it has sat on the shelf for long enough. I am doing a Montreal Comic Con exclusive cover for the PDF: this will not be made available again after the show and I am limiting the cards to only two hundred and fifty.

Here is a sneak peak of the exclusive cover:

Come early, I will not be reserving these. When they are gone, they are gone.

Hope to see you at the show!Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-50480286481774826552012-08-17T10:29:00.002-04:002012-08-17T10:30:40.747-04:00Warm-up sketchesFor the last two weeks or so, I've been taking suggestions for warm-up sketches on Twitter. Many congratulations to Ari and Cynthia; you couldn't ask for nicer friends and their reception was one of the all-time great parties.

As soon as I heard that they were tying the knot (they've been engaged for awhile), I knew I had to make something for them. My first inspiration was a Victorian-style portrait, Mike Mignola-style, with the two of them in formal garb surrounded by creepy kitsch like skulls and portraits of the long-dead and velvet curtains.

I had nearly finished the roughs for that idea, but like most things Mignola-style-but-not-drawn-by-Mignola it felt derivative; Mignola's so iconic in the way he works that he's nearly impossible to ape.

I was at a loss when my excellent wife said, "Why not do one of those shots of people surrounded by piles of dead things?" I interpreted this to mean the turn-of-the-century sepia photos of hunters, so that's what I ended up referencing.

So much character in this dude! He looks as dangerous as a schoolteacher but his kills speak for themselves. Since the girls are such avid gamers, especially fantasy, I thought that
their prey shouldn't be tigers or bears but something more fantastic; something like a
dragon.

I created the piece using inkwashes, and then I stole a technique from my pal Tim Sale; I used instant coffee to make sepia tones for the final piece. The colours scanned badly; the real illustration looks much jazzier.

The final piece of the puzzle was a slightly distressed, older-looking frame.

We went over to the girl's place for a BBQ last weekend and they had the piece up on the wall, and I'm still pretty pleased with it. I'd like to do more drawings like this; it was a lot of fun to experiment with media and draw something outside of my comfort zone.

Ari and I were out in Ottawa a couple of weeks ago for the awesome Ottawa Comic Con; I have a lot of photos of my sketches to post, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Soon!Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-12811847848818589312012-05-01T11:04:00.000-04:002012-05-01T11:04:50.560-04:00Mighty pirates!I love pirates. If I could draw nothing but pirates all day, that'd be the best life ever.

So, here's a couple I've done recently. The first two are the hero and villain from The Secret of Monkey Island series, my all-time favorite computer games and the games that got me into pirates to begin with. Ron Gilbert is one of my heroes.

The last pirate was created by my four-year-old nephew Dane, who told me a long story about Skully the fifty-armed flying ghost pirate who he expected to see in Mexico. I don't know if he did, so I drew a version for him.

The Monkey Island dudes were drawn with ink and markers; Skully was done in my sketchbook with colours and textures done digitally.
I remember seeing the solicits for this book in, what, 1995? 1996? at a run-down comic shop in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, but I never tracked it down and oh! how it needled me. Needled me for years.

Why would a book about a guy named Walter bother me so? Easy, mister. Walter is a spinoff of The Mask, which is one of my all-time favorite comic-book runs. The Mask, The Mask Returns, and The Mask Strikes Back are three of the funniest, smartest, and best-drawn action comics I have ever read. The writing is crisp and witty, the art is hilarious and detailed, and the mood is absolutely sublime. Those who only love the character from the (quite good) Jim Carrey vehicle from 1994 would be smart to check out Dark Horse's The Mask Omnibus, Vol. 1 which features all three. You won't regret it.

But what about Walter?

Walter was the main antagonist of all three series. A hulking, nigh-indestructible mute monstrosity, Walter was the only man who could hurt someone wearing the reality-warping Mask (known locally as "Big Head"). Upon conclusion of The Mask Strikes Back, Walter abandons his murderous campaign against The Mask and went into politics.

Yes, politics.

Walter: Campaign of Terror is about Walter's sally forth into the ludicrously dangerous race for mayor. He is surrounded by a chatty and mixed group of sycophants, liars, and thieves which include a wealthy dwarf, a hitman who's had too much plastic surgery, and a little girl with murder on her mind. Walter wades through them all, taking enormous amounts of damage and uttering not one single syllable. It's a fascinating and peculiar satire; I recommend tracking it down.

And the ads... There are ads in Walter for books ranging from Hellboy: Wake the Devil (who?) to Sin City: That Yellow Bastard (what?). It's a who's who of late nineties Dark Horse goodness: there's even an ad for the live-action Barb Wire movie! Reminds me fondly of wandering through the Dark Horse section of Another Dimension Comics in Calgary during breaks in class at ACAD in the early 2000's.

John Arcudi is currently writing (the absolutely amazing) BPRD: Hell on Earth, and Doug Mahnke is a superstar artist at DC. If you want a good look at where these two titans cut their teeth, look no further than the adventures of a green-headed lunatic... or, if you're adventurous yourself, the campaign of terror of a brute named Walter.
I'll do a proper writeup of what I've been doing for the past few weeks. It hasn't been fun and it hasn't been easy and I hope you never have to go through any of it.

Decided to get back into the groove after reading the terrific B.P.R.D.: The Long Death #1 this week. The only active superhuman member of the team, Johann Kraus, takes center stage yet again as the B-plot involving Captain Ben Daimio, Daryl the wendigo, and a certain 15-foot jaguar god begins to wind down. I eagerly anticipate issue #2 as much as I dread it.
Johann got snazzy new duds in the recently-concluded B.P.R.D.: Russia and I was itching to draw it.

Since it's been awhile, here's where you can find me elsewhere on the net:

As far as other news: I lettered and coloured Green Wake #10, the final issue, which comes out very soon. It was daunting taking over from regular colorist Riley Rossmo for an issue but he's also drawing something like five books so he needed a breather. The issue is very good; Kurtis and Riley wrap the story up very effectively. Fans will not be disappointed.

I'm also lettering Riley's upcoming book Rebel Blood (the first issue comes out in March) and I hope you check it out. It's Riley's first work as writer as well as artist and it's a surprisingly sophisticated book (considering it features zombie wolves and men with deer heads and rats with eyes growing out of their backs).

I made a cameo in today's Princess Planet (written and drawn by internet buddy and fellow new dad Brian McLachlan). I am the unlucky fellow in panel one. He's got to be one of the easiest villains to draw, he's doesn't really have a face. Looks kind of like a Mexican wrestler crossed with a dinosaur, I can see why kids like him so much. I've always thought of him as Spider-Man's old pants, but I still love him.
The new Venom series by Rick Remender (and a raft of artists including my good buddy Tom Fowler) is great, by the way. If you're not reading it, it's got a nice mix of crazy alien monster action and heartfelt human emotions. The human half of Venom, Flash Thompson, is a total trainwreck of a human being and it is glorious to read.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-31327585952948125582011-12-07T13:39:00.000-05:002011-12-07T13:39:20.627-05:00TrypticonBeen playing a bit of Transformers: War for Cybertron after the family goes to sleep, and it's pretty fun stuff. I particularly like Trypticon, the Decepticon City, who is the final boss of the game and is basically a Godzilla transformer. He's pretty great; I'm a big fan of blatant shout-outs in my media, I guess.

Trypticon (what a name! so good) stuck in my head so much that I doodled a sketch of him while watching some Luther last night. Colored it last night (instead of playing the game!) and here it is.
As always, my webcomic That's So Kraven! updated today. I am ending the strip at 75 episodes, so there's only two more to go after this. It'll be a blessing to no longer have to watch That's So Raven.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058748398156965966.post-34200907499842082292011-11-29T10:27:00.000-05:002011-11-29T10:27:37.129-05:00BioShock againCan't get enough of drawing BioShock stuff. I bought a new sketchbook the other day, and I decided to have some fun throwing down some messy ink and tossing some devil-may-care Photoshop behind it all. Try out some textures. Experiment, experiment, experiment.

None of these characters will make sense unless you're familiar with the video game BioShock. Here's the trailer (warning for violence). Hopefully you'll think that the drawings are cool nonetheless.
As always, my weekly webcomic That's So Kraven! is updated. I announced last week that I am retiring the strip at 75 'webisodes'. However, I will be launching a new webcomic in the new year and I'm very excited about it.Kelly Tindallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15506903063621322904noreply@blogger.com0
